Frequently Asked Questions

  • What areas of the Gold Coast does Hutchinson Electrical Group service?

We service the entire Gold Coast and surrounds, including Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Robina, Coomera, Helensvale, Nerang, Currumbin, Coolangatta and more. If you're unsure whether you're in our service area, call us on1300 587 713and we'll confirm in under a minute.

  • Is Hutchinson Electrical Group a licensed and insured electrician?

Yes. We're a fully licensed Queensland electrical contractor (ARC License: L167448 + Electrical Contractors License: 88463) and carry public liability insurance. All work is completed to the Australian Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) and we issue a Certificate of Testing and Compliance where required.

  • How much does an electrician cost on the Gold Coast?

Most jobs are quoted upfront so you know the price before we start. Pricing depends on the work — minor jobs like installing a power point or light fitting are typically lower cost, while switchboard upgrades or rewiring are larger investments. Call1300 587 713or request a free quote for an accurate price.

  • Do you do both residential and commercial electrical work?

Yes. We handle residential jobs (homes, units, renovations and repairs) as well as commercial, industrial and small-business work (fit-outs, lighting, switchboards and maintenance) across the Gold Coast. Whatever the property type, the work is completed by a licensed electrician to Australian standards.

  • Why does my safety switch (RCD) keep tripping?

A safety switch trips to protect you when it detects a fault — usually a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, water in a circuit, or an overloaded power point. Try unplugging recent appliances and resetting it once; if it trips again, stop and call a licensed electrician on1300 587 713, as repeated tripping signals a fault that needs inspection.

  • Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?

You may need a switchboard upgrade if you have ceramic fuses, no safety switches, frequent tripping, flickering lights, or you're adding load like air-conditioning, an EV charger or solar. Older boards often can't safely handle modern demand. We can inspect your switchboard and advise whether an upgrade is needed.

  • Are interconnected smoke alarms a legal requirement in Queensland?

Yes. Under Queensland law, all homes must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on each level of the home. The deadline for all owner-occupied dwellings is 1 January 2027 (rental and sold properties are already required to comply). We supply, install and certify compliant alarms.

  • Can you install an EV charger at my home?

Yes. We install home EV chargers for all major electric vehicle brands, including assessing your switchboard and wiring to make sure your supply can safely handle the load. We'll recommend the right charger and location, then install it to Australian standards.

  • Does Hutchinson Electrical install ceiling fans, downlights and extra power points?

Yes — these are some of our most common jobs. We install and replace ceiling fans, LED downlights, light fittings, exhaust fans, USB power points and extra outlets throughout your home, leaving the site clean and tested before we leave.
